Step into a one-of-a-kind German experience right here in Jasper, Indiana! The Schnitzelbank Restaurant, long celebrated for its rich German heritage and authentic cuisine, is now home to a newly completed Glockenspiel clock tower bringing the sights and sounds of Old-World Bavaria to life.
The Schnitzelbank first introduced a Glockenspiel in 1988, inspired by founder Larry Hanselman and crafted in partnership with local builder Larry Loechte of Jasper Lumber. Their vision began with trips to Germany and Frankenmuth, Michigan, where they studied traditional clock towers. With sketches and photographs in hand, they designed and built the restaurant’s first Glockenspiel, a unique attraction that quickly became a community treasure.
After three years of meticulous research and construction, the new Glockenspiel is now complete. This beautifully crafted timepiece features 16 pitched bells that chime with precision, a conductor figure leading the performance, and three animated characters dancing to lively German-inspired tunes. The word “Glockenspiel” translates to “bells play,” and these elaborate timepieces have long been symbols of cultural heritage in Europe. The Schnitzelbank’s updated Glockenspiel is one of only a few in the United States, making it a rare and special attraction for visitors.
Since opening as a tavern in 1961 and transforming into a full German restaurant in 1971, the Schnitzelbank has been a gathering place for families, friends, and visitors from across the region. With its authentic atmosphere, warm hospitality, and unforgettable food, it has become a landmark in Dubois County.
